SIPs Garden Rooms

What Makes a Dream All-Year-Round Garden Room?

Superior thermal efficiency from Hemsec SIPs, that’s what…

Whether you are building a garden room, annexe or house extension for an office, gym or chill-out room, then make sure you construct it using SIPs, the high-performance building system. SIPs are thermally efficient insulating the building up to 0.14 U-Value; they make your new living space cosy-warm in winter and super-cool in the summer, with great soundproofing.

Plus of course it will look great, ‘wowing’ with contemporary designs, and maximizing space and light, as in our photographs, which are all provided thanks to JML Garden Rooms.

SIPs are Structural Insulated Panels, which means they can be used to form the main structure of the walls, floors and roofs. They are considered by many to be the future of house-building, so you’ll be staying ahead of the game with a SIPs-built space.

You don’t need any further insulation for the living space to stay warm in winter and cool in the summer, with very little or no electrical heating or cooling. That means very low energy bills for the residents.

Extremely quick to build – from two weeks

Hemsec’s customers are usually property developers and building contractors. They tell us that the SIP super-structure itself can be erected in two days, weather-tight and ready for internal works to commence. This means a typical garden room can be up and ready-for-use in about two-to-three weeks.

Building companies love this, because they can carry out many more jobs in a year with far fewer materials and workers on site.

Home-owners love it because there is very little disruption to their lives in comparison with traditional building.

Structural strength and durability accredited by BBA

Hemsec SIPs are manufactured with a rigid Polyurethane (PUR) core of high thermal performance insulation, injected between two outer skins of oriented strand board (OSB/3).

This means when they are used for buildings, not only are they super-insulated, but they are also structurally extremely strong and durable.

Hemsec’s SIPs are BBA accredited, which verifies that they have been tested, assessed and certified suitable for use within a building project framework. Only buildings created with BBA accredited SIPs are usually accepted for mortgages, so it’s important to check.

Environmentally friendly with low running costs

A SIPs building is so energy-efficient that it requires very little heating or cooling, because due to superior air tightness, energy doesn’t escape as it does in traditionally-constructed buildings. The building therefore contributes to a reduction in CO2 levels.

The timber we use as the facings on our SIPs is Oriented Strand Board (OSB). Our OSB is PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Certified meaning we are committed to promote sustainable forest management.

We are currently working to demonstrate how much less energy SIPs use during the manufacturing process, meaning less embodied energy than traditional construction materials such as concrete and masonry.

So, all round, you’re contributing to a sustainable future with SIPs.

Design flexibility, more room inside and well insulated

Architects have more freedom to design a creative, beautiful building using SIPs, because they can be engineered and fabricated for modern designs which incorporate a lot of light.

There’s more room inside the building because the strong walls are relatively thin, and they are nice and quiet inside, thanks to the excellent insulation.

There is growing evidence that the low running costs and environmental credentials increase the resale value of a SIPs building, too. Owners tend to be pretty evangelical about them, and spread the word amongst friends and family, so their popularity is spreading.
