The test were carried out at Efectis UK and will enable customers to achieve improved fire-resistant performance with Hemsec SIPs. Hemsec upgraded the existing fire resistance test from BS 476 pt21:1987, FR60, to meet market demands moving towards the more stringent test BS EN 1365-1:2012. SIP panel FR30 Fire Resistance test was also added to our product certification using standard 12mm gypsum plasterboard. By updating the new FR60 to more stringent standards and adding FR30 for residential builds, Hemsec SIPs can offer better design flexibility for fire-resistant performance.   What is Fire Resistance in building materials? Fire resistance is the ability of a material to withstand the effects of fire, or to resist ignition and burning. This characteristic is crucial as it determines how long structural elements and components within a building can function during a fire, providing critical time for evacuation and reducing the damage to the property. The ability of a building structure to withstand fire, at least long enough for safe evacuation and effective intervention, can mean the difference between a minor incident and a catastrophic loss. In construction and building safety, fire-resistant materials are both a regulatory requirement and a fundamental component of modern design, construction and safety planning. While no practical building material is truly fireproof, well-constructed houses and buildings can help prevent tragedies by using materials, systems and build up’s that offer fire-resistant performance. What are Fire Resistance Ratings and Standards in construction? The goal is to construct a building that slows down the spread of fire, allowing occupants to escape and giving emergency responders time to arrive. This is why materials are rated in respect of how long it would take fire to affect their structural abilities.  To ensure building materials meet necessary safety standards, they are subjected to fire resistance tests which assess performance under controlled conditions. By understanding fire ratings and fire performance, architects, builders and SIPs installers can make informed choices about the materials they use, significantly enhancing the safety of the buildings they design and construct. What is BS EN 1365-1:2012 for fire resistance?   BS EN 1365-1:2012 is a crucial European standard that specifies the method of testing the fire resistance of load-bearing walls, both internal and external applications. The test measures a wall's ability to resist the spread of fire from one side to another while maintaining its load-bearing capacity. What does BS EN 1365-1 Fire Resistance Test include?   The fire resistance test outlined in EN 1365-1 focuses on several key areas:     Loadbearing Capacity (R): The walls ability to maintain a load. This is determined by measuring the vertical deflection of the wall.   Insulation (I): The test evaluates how well the wall insulates and prevents the transmission of heat to the unexposed face. This is determined by measuring the temperature rise of the unexposed face of the wall with thermocouples.   Integrity (E) refers to the wall's ability to continue functioning without developing cracks or openings through which flames or hot gases can pass.   Hemsec Fire Resistance Testing   Efectis UK tested Hemsec Residential SIPs panels with a thickness of 142 mm, consisting of a perimeter frame (C16 grade softwood), a core (rigid urethane foam), facings (OSB), and splines (OSB). Battens, referenced as C16 softwood grade battens with dimensions 38 x 25 mm, are fixed to the exposed face of the SIP panel. The total load applied was 40kN, on a 3000 mm high sample.   For FR30 (30 minutes fire resistance test) Knauf gypsum based plasterboard 12mm thick was through-fixed to the battens.   For FR60 (60 minutes fire resistance test) Knauf gypsum based Fire Panel 15mm thick was through-fixed to the battens. Gypsum board, also known as plasterboard or drywall, is the most commonly used fire-resistant interior finish and is commonly used to achieve FR30. Fireline gypsum board is treated with additives to improve its fire-resistance property, making it suitable to achieve FR60. Are Hemsec SIPs panels Fire Rated? What did Hemsec SIPs Fire Resistance Tests Achieve? The FR60 test passed the 60 minutes fire resistance and Hemsec stopped the test prior to failure at 66 minutes , achieving 10% over the test requirement, to allow for full examination rather than burning to failure. The 142mm Hemsec SIP panel achieved a fire resistance classification under 13501-2:2023 of REI60. The FR30 test passed the 30 minutes fire resistance and Hemsec stopped the test prior to failure at 40 minutes. The 142mm Hemsec SIP panel achieved a fire resistance classification under 13501-2:2023 of REI30. The extended field of application includes: a) decrease in height. b) increase in the thickness of the wall. c) increase in the thickness of component materials. d) decrease in linear dimensions of boards or dimensions of panels of but not thickness. e) decrease in stud spacing. f) decrease in distance of fixing centres. g) decrease in the applied load. h) increase in the width provided that the specimen was tested at full width or 3m wide, whichever is the larger. Students enjoyed an informative morning learning about SIPs And getting hands-on with our panels to help inform their studies.   The students received a talk from  Dan Haworth , Head of Manufacturing, and a factory tour, followed by round table speed meetings with staff from all areas of the business. They also had the unique opportunity to get hands-on with building miniature SIP Panel structures.   And to add a little extra fun, we set up a bit of friendly competition with a structural design challenge with custard creams! Who does it affect? What are the main updates for BS 3632:2023? How does BS 3632:2023 affect the design of new residential park homes? Who is the authority that sets these Building Standards? How can Hemsec SIPs help? The BS 3632 standards were first published in 1963. Until today, the BS 3632:2015 was the most recent update to the specification, focusing on increased thermal insulation, ventilation, stability of the home in situ, and room size. The update aimed to improve the standard of living for residents whilst reducing energy consumption and running costs for both park owners and residential park homeowners.   From today (30 th September), the BS 3632 standards will updated again. The new BS 3632:2023 standard focuses on residential park homes and we’re going to look at the main changes and how this will impact residential park home manufacturers who need to meet the new more stringent standard.   The main improvements are centred around thermal efficiency, energy savings, and creating an improved space for the park homeowner, challenging manufacturers to create a space that’s comfortable all year round. The key improvements include:   Thermal efficiency  Enhanced moisture control Reduced fuel bills  Improved acoustics  Noise reduction  Optimising Space  Better value for money  What is the new BS 3632:2023 standard? The BS 3632:2023 standard is a British standard that specifies requirements for the manufacture of residential park homes for use as a permanent place of residence. The standard, which will supersede BS 3632:2015 (to be withdrawn on 30 th September 2024), was published by BSI and came into effect on 30 th September 2023.   The 2005 revision of the standard was aimed at ensuring that residential park homes are suitable as a permanent dwelling. The 2015 update reflected advances in technology and building techniques and included significant improvements to energy efficiency measures. These measures helped to reduce the environmental footprint of residential park homes.   The 2023 update has gone even further in considering technical direction as the UK strives for a more sustainable future. In addition, improved thermal transmittance through the external envelope structure, along with moisture control enhancements to help reduce risk of interstitial condensation.   The new standard is available to purchase here: https://knowledge.bsigroup.com/products/residential-park-homes-specification-2?version=standard How does BS 3632:2023 affect the design and compliance of new residential park homes? The U Values of the floors, walls & roofs in the external envelope must have a better performance level than the previous BS 3632:2015 standard.   The new U-values required are:  To summarise, this means: Roof U Values remain the same as in 2015’s standards at 0.2 Wall U values change by 0.05 from 0.35 to 0.3  Floor U Values change by 0.09 from 0.35 to 0.26 (floors should be exposed for calculations)    The standard states that the ‘average thermal transmittances (U-values) shall be calculated in accordance with BR 443 (N1). The external envelope structure (excluding any site-fixed underfloor skirting or any doors or windows) shall be not greater than: 0.26 W/m 2 K for floors; (NOTE: For calculation purposes, the floor is considered exposed.) 0.3 W/m 2 K for walls; and 0.2 W/m 2 K for roofs.’ (BSI, BS 3632:2023, Section 4.2.3 – External Envelope Structure, page 16) What is a U value? A U value, also known as thermal transmittance, measures the thermal efficiency of the insulation material used for the external walls, floor, and roof. The higher performing the insulation material is, the thinner the material will be and the better the U Value will be. U values can be affected by the installation process and be significantly higher (worse) where there are cold bridges, gaps, or where it’s been fitted poorly. Who is the authority that sets these Building Standards? The British Standard Institute (BSI) is a body that defines the standards for businesses and products within Great Britain. BS 3632 addresses the design criteria that ensure residential park homes and lodges are required to meet to be deemed fit for purpose and meet the highest industry standards.  Why build your residential park homes BS 3632:2023? Manufacturers who do not comply with the new standard will lose their competitive edge and sales could be affected. Those who do will be shouting it from the rooftops! Some forward-thinking park home manufacturers have already been trialling different solutions.   For park home manufacturers who are members of the National Caravan Council (NCC), you can participate in their Self Certification Scheme to ensure BS 3632 compliance. The NCC will verify each home and issue a manufacturer’s declaration of compliance certificate once the test and inspection summary has been reviewed.    How can Hemsec SIPs help? Our Highlights The event was buzzing with excitement around the key themes of Resilience and Opportunity in the Cold Chain . There were many thought-provoking discussions and presentations throughout the conference, here are some of our key speaker highlights: PWC's Claire Fox and Alex Shaw told us that nearly 40% of CEO’s don’t think that their companies will be economically viable a decade from now if they remain on the current plan. Also 60% of their survey respondents expect ESG initiatives to be a key part of their agenda in the year ahead. PWC also added that ESG initiatives are key to attracting new talent to the industry. People are now very well educated on well-being, and it is important that the industry meets the expectations of workers to retain and recruit successfully. Clive Thornley from Styne Refrigeration, reviewed CCF's 2023 stats and the opportunities & challenges for refrigeration engineering in the short and long term. Chris Hall, Asda Supply Chain VP, delivered a fantastic speech urging companies not to wait until all the stars are aligned to try something new. The idea that not everything needs to be successful at first and we should be working as an industry to ‘ fail fast to succeed quickly ’ was inspiring. The On-Site Heat Company talked through how they have implemented a system to recover heat energy from one place and utilise it in the same building for different processes. Shane Brennan Chief Executive of the CCF, asked the industry whether we can reduce the blast freeze standard from -18 to maybe -15 or less. He believes the answer is ‘probably yes’, but the need is for more research and data to drive customer acceptance. Tom Southall mirrored this and suggested that the CCF could be a great forum for lobbying for this. In the 'Energy Zone' break out session, Jakob Tercon discussed the opportunities around ‘ waste as a resource ’ and gave examples of manufacturers that are collaborating with their neighbours to redirect waste energy in the form of heating or cooling. This localised approach was an insightful idea, and something that really got us thinking. The topic of conversation was ‘ Right First Time – Principles for Excellence in Cold Store Construction and Refurbishment ’. It is predicted that the cold chain will grow significantly due to both population growth and the need to keep vaccines at very specific temperatures. However, inflation, soaring energy costs, energy insecurity and concerns around climate change and sustainability, means that the best cold stores will need to operate using less energy. So how do you achieve more with less? The materials specified for the installation must meet regulations, have superior thermal performance, be extremely durable and hygienic, and meet fire regulations. Insulated metal panels which contain a PIR system (polyisocyanurate) can meet all these requirements, whilst also facilitating quick and straightforward installation, which reduces build time in the warehouse. Hemsec steel faced insulated panels have a high thermal performance and airtight joints which provide a structure to limit heat transfer, prevent air movement, and helps to ensure humidity and air quality levels are consistent. Thermal breaks and rebates can be incorporated into walling to suit ceiling thicknesses. The closed cell structure within the PIR core prevents moisture absorption which makes them preferable to products such as mineral wool as they prevent moisture becoming trapped within the core, which could affect the structural integrity. Hemsec metal insulated panels are self-supporting and allow for single spanning capability. This means they can be used for large areas with no need for supporting pillars, increasing storage capacity and improving the ease with which personnel and machines navigate storage areas. Steel is robust and when it is laminated with the required coatings, it makes the insulated panels ideal for aggressive environments, such as pharmaceutical and food production, where cleaning with abrasive materials is necessary to maintain high levels of hygiene. Hemsec metal insulated panels can be manufactured with a wide variety of finishes depending on requirements, including food-safe finishes, which means no further materials or labour are required to build your structure. This saves time and money, as well as increases the internal space available. In the future it is likely that most cold stores will include solar panels but, in the UK, solar power alone is unlikely to provide enough power for the whole cold storage operation. On site energy generation may also include energy management mechanisms like battery storage, centralised cooling and heat recycling.   The future of the cold chain… The cold chain industry must assess the potential for local collaboration as part of energy strategies, to harness the potential offered by district cooling and heating schemes. Many businesses are aiming to be able to go off-grid and even sell excess energy as a new revenue stream. Here’s why you should consider SIPs. Many people are opting to improve rather than move when looking to add more living space. By building an extension, garden room or annex to an existing property, homeowners can create additional space and boost the value of their home. Traditionally, people have opted to use a masonry or ‘brick and block’ method where insulation is then added to the cavities, the demand for Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) has rocketed as homeowners are asking for better insulation so they can reduce their energy bills. SIPs provide a wide range of benefits as a construction method, including faster build times, durability, and thermal efficiency. Below, we look at some of the reasons why SIPs are becoming increasingly popular and what factors you should consider when using SIPs.   Increased thermal efficiency With household bills expected to quadruple in less than a year and temperatures fluctuating up to 40 degrees this year, due to climate change, now is the perfect time to consider SIPs if you’re looking to extend or build a garden room or annex. Building with SIPs provides a high level of thermal efficiency and extreme airtightness, which results in reduced days that your building needs heating or cooling, significantly reducing energy bills. Additionally, the jointing system of SIP structures offers extreme airtightness which results in cooler homes during the warmer periods. Costs of building with SIPs  One of the factors when considering making improvements to an existing space is upfront costs, so how much does it cost to build an extension, garden room or annex with SIPs? When looking at costs, there are multiple factors that can affect the cost of building with SIPs, these include; Quality of SIPs – it is important to choose a SIP that is high-quality and provides a lower U-value. SIPs buildings use up to 50% less energy than other building materials. Ensuring the SIP is high-quality will reduce long-term costs as the building will be more energy efficient. When comparing the quality of a SIP, some important factors to be considered are the manufacturing process of the insulation and relevant certifications. In relation to the manufacturing process, Polyurethane insulation (PUR) provides a higher R-value as the insulation is auto-bonded to the panel, this method is stronger than the glued EPS alternative. This is an important factor as using a PUR SIP rather than an EPS SIP can prevent delamination issues. Certification is another factor to consider when building with SIPs to ensure they are high-quality. BBA Certified products are extensively tested for Structural, Acoustic and Thermal properties, including Fire Resistance which are important factors when selecting a material for your build. Many homeowners find that they cannot secure finance on a SIP that doesn’t have a BBA certificate. The size of the building – the larger the building, the more panels will be required. However, SIPs create more internal space as the required u values can often be achieved with the SIP alone, without the need for additional layers of insulation. Follow-on trades – more complex projects will require an increased number of follow-on trades, once the initial building superstructure is in place and can be made weather-tight quickly. Using SIPs, which are prefabricated in a controlled manufacturing environment means that follow-on trades can be onsite faster, with fewer delays. Although SIPs have a slightly higher upfront cost in comparison to traditional masonry materials, the construction time is 60% faster than other construction methods due to the SIPs being cut to size. This will reduce both build time and costs which can make the overall project costs comparable.  FAQs How long will my extension, garden room or annex last? SIPs are a very durable construction material and are typically covered by a warranty of up to 60 years (two mortgage periods), although SIP builds last much longer in reality. Can I build my own SIPs extension or garden room? Whilst SIPs projects can be straightforward, we recommend contacting a professional tradesperson to carry out the work. This models the building fabric U values (heat loss over the surface area) and the PSI values (heat loss through the junction).   Table 1 below outlines the new Limiting (minimum) Standards: How to achieve the new U values The new U Values required have been particularly reduced for home extensions, loft conversions & dormers. These U Values can be achieved by using a fabric-first approach which creates improved thermal performance. Trevor Clements, Head of Business Development at Hertfordshire Building Control put it this way, during the BBA Future Home Standards webinar in November 2021: “There may be a few of you out there who are involved in extensions & alterations to dwellings, where it’s a bit more than a tweak…walls from 0.28 to 0.18 (SAP rating)… it will be interesting to see how designers and industry hit that standard with your traditional cavity walls, brick and block. Are we going to be seeing more use of high-efficiency insulation…because that’s going to be a huge cavity if you are going to be using mineral fibre or fibre glass bats to achieve that mark?” What are the benefits of using SIPs? Builders and installers can offer their customers something better and different from their competitors, being able to come closer to meeting FHS and Passivhaus standards and resulting in reduced days in their home needing heating which significantly reduces energy bills. This will make their homes warmer in winter & cooler in summer and directly addresses the ongoing rising fuel prices and fuel poverty. As the owner of a SIPs home built in 2020 puts it: “It was a total revelation to move into such a beautiful home in the Highlands of Scotland that effectively doesn’t need heating. This makes it a comfortable house to live in as it also means there are no rapid fluctuations of heat.” The home meets, if not exceeds, current Passivhaus standards, as do many SIPs-built properties. Other benefits include; Training. According to Richard Smith and Dan Hicks of the NHBC (Building for Tomorrow technical conference), bricklayers and other trades will need training because the industry is moving mostly from 100mm to 150mm cavities and beyond Impact on associated materials such as wall ties being too short Delays in supply of traditional materials (currently barely impacting SIPs, which are generally available from Hemsec within 2-4 weeks of order) Rising costs of materials, particularly imported Speed of build and few if any delays due to weather (superstructure is up in around two days) SIPs give greater accuracy of material sizes versus design SIPs give greater versatility in design, particularly with large, uncluttered roof spans Looking to the future This inter im Part L update is part of a series of amendments to building regulations that lead up to The Future Homes Standard due in 2025. The target for operation energy reduction is expected to be a massive 75-80% reduction and there is a new methodology SAP 11 being developed to measure this.
